This morning, on Holy Thursday, April 2, 2026, starting at 10:00 AM, Butare Cathedral hosted a special celebration as the Chrism Mass was held. The Mass was presided over by His Lordship Msgr. Jean Bosco Ntagungira, Bishop of the Diocese of Butare, joined by fellow bishops: His Lordship Msgr. Filipo Rukamba, and His Lordship Msgr. Kizito Bahujimihigo, Bishop of the Diocese of Kibungo (who is on retreat).

The Mass was remarkable not only for the gathering of three bishops but also for bringing together the priests of the diocese, sisters, consecrated persons, and the faithful of Butare Cathedral Parish. Among the priests present was Father Bwema Lambert, who serves as the Program Director of Radio Maria Rwanda, also attending this solemn liturgy.
The Holy Chrism was consecrated at the cathedral altar in a spirit of deep reverence and unity, following the tradition of the Church during the Easter season. Many faithful looked forward to how these oils will be used throughout the coming year, including for baptisms, anointing of the sick, and the ordination of those called to ministry.
In his homily, Bishop Ntagungira reminded Christians that the Holy Chrism is a sign of Christ himself, who is anointed and who anoints his Church. He encouraged priests and the laity alike to take part in sanctifying people and their families, where God continues to work in visible ways.
The Mass concluded with hymns and spiritual celebrations, marking Holy Thursday and preparing the hearts of the faithful for the remaining sacred days of the Easter Triduum.
