Save Parish, Diocese of Butare – October 18, 2025
On October 18, 2025, more than 2,750 catechists from all Catholic dioceses across Rwanda gathered for a national pilgrimage to Save Parish, the historic birthplace of Catholic evangelization in the country.

Save holds a special place in the history of the Church in Rwanda. As the first mission established by the White Fathers, it is where the ministry of catechesis was first introduced. For generations, Save has remained a spiritual home and a source of inspiration for catechists across the nation.
The pilgrimage was held under the theme: “Turi abakateshiste, turangamiye Kristu Soko y’amizero, ubuvandimwe n’amahoro” (“We are catechists, looking to Christ, Source of hope, fraternity, and peace”). This message guided the day’s reflections, emphasizing the vital role of catechists in nurturing faith, building community, and promoting reconciliation.
The day featured a solemn Eucharistic celebration, moments of prayer and adoration, testimonies from catechists, and a historical reflection on the legacy of Save. Participants renewed their commitment to the catechetical mission with joy and spiritual fervor.
The Diocese of Butare was honored to host this national event, reaffirming Save’s enduring role as a beacon of faith and a wellspring of missionary zeal. As the Church in Rwanda continues its journey, the dedication of catechists remains a cornerstone of its pastoral mission.
