Kibeho Prepares for Historic Pilgrimage as 44th Apparition Anniversary Draws Thousands

KIBEHO, RWANDA – In what is expected to be one of the largest religious gatherings in recent years, the Shrine of Our Lady of Kibeho is making final preparations for the 44th anniversary celebration of the Marian apparitions, scheduled for November 27-28, 2025. The event, commemorating the appearances of the Virgin Mary as “Nyina wa Jambo” (Mother of the Word), is already attracting international attention with pilgrims from across East Africa and beyond confirming their attendance.

Enhanced Security and Safety Measures Implemented

The shrine management has released comprehensive guidelines for what local officials are calling “the most organized pilgrimage in Kibeho’s history.” In an unprecedented move, authorities have mandated that all pilgrims must carry identification and health insurance documents, a measure aimed at ensuring both security and proper medical care for attendees.

“These guidelines represent our commitment to creating a safe environment for spiritual celebration,” said a shrine representative. “We’re particularly concerned about vulnerable groups and have strongly advised pregnant women and those with health conditions to consider their safety given the expected crowds.”

Crackdown on Scams and Fraudulent Activities

A notable aspect of this year’s announcement is the explicit warning against scammers exploiting the Kibeho name. Recent months have seen increased reports of individuals falsely soliciting funds for “Kibeho projects” or offering fraudulent prayer services.

“We want to make it clear that the shrine does not operate through random phone calls requesting money,” the management emphasized. “Pilgrims should be extremely cautious and report any suspicious activity to authorities.”

Two-Day Spiritual Program Unveiled

The spiritual program, released two weeks ahead of the event, promises a rich tapestry of worship and reflection. The celebration begins on November 27th with a vigil mass at 4:00 PM, featuring readings in French, English, and Kinyarwanda – reflecting the international character of the expected pilgrims.

The main event on November 28th will include the recitation of the Chaplet of the Seven Sorrows of Mary, catechesis, and a solemn festive mass at 11:00 AM. The choice of Gospel reading from John – “In the beginning was the Word” – directly connects to the title “Our Lady of the Word” that forms the centerpiece of the celebration.

Logistical Planning Reaches Unprecedented Levels

Local businesses and accommodation providers report being fully booked as pilgrims secure lodging ahead of the event. The shrine’s strict prohibition against sleeping on shrine grounds has prompted many to make arrangements in nearby towns.

“Every hotel, guesthouse, and family hosting pilgrims is preparing for what we expect to be the largest gathering since before the pandemic,” said Jean-Claude Ndayishimiye, a local tour operator. “The economic impact on our community is significant, but more importantly, we’re honored to welcome the faithful from around the world.”

Digital Participation for Global Audience

Recognizing that many cannot make the physical journey, the shrine has partnered with Radio Maria Rwanda, Pacis TV, and will stream all ceremonies live on their YouTube channel “Sanctuaire Notre Dame de Kibeho.”

“This digital expansion allows the global Catholic community to join in this important celebration,” said Father Pierre Claver, media coordinator for the event. “The messages of Kibeho – prayer, conversion, and compassion – are needed now more than ever in our world.”

Historical Significance

The Kibeho apparitions, which occurred between 1981 and 1989, gained official recognition from the Catholic Church in 2001. The messages given to visionaries emphasized the importance of prayer, penance, and a return to God – themes that continue to resonate with believers worldwide.

As the November dates approach, local authorities, volunteer groups, and church officials are coordinating closely to ensure that the 44th anniversary celebration honors both the spiritual significance of the event and the practical needs of what promises to be a historic gathering of the faithful
