Kigali, Rwanda – In a landmark event for both the academic and faith communities, the Catholic University of Rwanda (CUR) officially inaugurated its new branch in the Archdiocese of Kigali on Tuesday, September 18, 2025. The grand opening was held within the Parish of Nyamirambo.
The celebratory event was graced by a solemn Eucharistic celebration, presided over by His Eminence Antoine Cardinal Kambanda. Cardinal Kambanda, the Archbishop of Kigali, also serves as the President of the Rwanda Episcopal Conference, underscoring the national significance of this academic expansion.
The ceremony was a gathering of high-ranking ecclesiastical and academic leaders. In attendance was Mgr. Jean Bosco Ntagungira, Bishop of the Diocese of Butare, who also holds the position of Chancellor of the Catholic University of Rwanda. Also present was Mgr. Philippe Rukamba, the Bishop of Butare, who was celebrating his birthday, adding a personal joy to the historic occasion.
The inauguration was a vibrant community affair, drawing a diverse audience that included priests, men and women religious, as well as students and faculty members of the university.
This new campus in the heart of Kigali represents a significant step in expanding access to the university’s unique blend of academic excellence and moral formation. It is expected to serve a wider student population in the capital city, offering them the opportunity to engage in higher education rooted in Catholic values and social principles.
The opening of the Nyamirambo branch marks a new chapter for the Catholic University of Rwanda, reinforcing its commitment to shaping future leaders who will contribute positively to Rwandan society and beyond.
